Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in San Diego, Chida Warren-Darby is a second-generation Black newspaper publisher and media professional serving in San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria’s administration. At the onset of the administration, Chida was appointed as the Deputy Director of Communications and promoted to the Director of Boards and Commissions. Before her role with Mayor Gloria, Chida founded a digital Black lifestyle publication covering life, politics, and the arts, birthed out of her role as Co-Publisher & Managing Editor of The San Diego Voice & Viewpoint Newspaper. The 64-year-old family business is the city’s oldest and most prominent African American publication. For almost a decade in this capacity, out of the country’s nearly 200 Black newspapers, she was the youngest African American newspaper publisher concurrently functioning as the Black Press Association’s West Coast Region 5 President, which governed the African American newspaper publishers tied to the association on the west coast. While running the newspaper, Chida created a non-profit organization instructing school-aged girls on their image, communication skills, educational development, and life lessons. She and her team reached families by bringing awareness to the issue of sex trafficking in the Black community, drawing crowds of up to 400 at sessions. Additionally, Chida served as the Executive Director of San Diego’s first Black Chamber of Commerce, creating forums for addressing economic issues affecting San Diego’s Black business community. A domestic abuse survivor, Chida advocates for victims of domestic abuse, lending her voice and counsel to women who are surviving the aftermath.
